I agree with the "Yankees' fans are douches" part, but as I recall, the objection to Maris breaking the record was the new 162 game season as opposed to the old 156 game seasons when Ruth did it.

We can do that with every single rule change. We can do that with the change to the designated hitter for pitching records - changes to the ball material, infield fly rule - intraleague play.

The only "asterisk" in the record book was for Maris, and that would NEVER have been done to Mickey Mantle.

That is what drives the whole - asterisk movement - when the roid stars, (McGwire, Sosa and Bonds) were hitting homeruns, the announcers continued to reinforce that these records would be valid in the 156 game seasons.

Like that matters. Ruth didn't even play every game in 1927. He had 540 at bats to Maris 590 - but the pitching in the league was WAY better in 1961.

We can do this with...every...record...and...rule...change.

Was only done because Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick had been a close personal friend of Babe Ruth.

In 1962 (the year after Maris broke the record), Maury Wills stole 104 bases to break Ty Conb's long standing record of 96. No asterisk there.

1961 was an expansion year, which means watered-down pitching staffs. Lots of hitting records are typically set/broken in expansion years.
