I have a 2011 X5 and it is an awesome driving car and hauls arse. That being said, it's had issues. A couple of months ago the drive shaft broke and destroyed the oil pan. Previously the car wouldn't shut off. Wife had to drive it to the dealer for them to shut it off. Something wrong with the igition switch. It's still under warranty, plus we purchased an extended warranty. A must for a BMW.

It depends on what you want. I get into it with my Lexus loving GF all the time about why anyone would drive european vehicles over the relative ease of luxury asian makers.

For example, in my anecdote about the girl who got the X5, she should have never gotten one. To justify what you're going to put up with, you have to either just love everything unique to the X5, or you have to have some interest in performance. Otherwise, just get an MDX (or another nice SUV/crossover). Although the MDX is a pretty nice all around compromise, FWIW.

I think it is fair to put the X5 in a similar category as Land Rovers, though with different (and perhaps less severe) faults and different attributes. But I'd never recommend either for someone looking for a luxury SUV who cares nothing about off road capability or some other performance aspect.
