Why is that a surprise?

Because NIN has sold more albums, and has a much larger following than JA.

Jane's Addiction was one of the biggest bands in the late 80s/early 90s.

I like JA, but this is fricking silly.

NIN does have a dedicated, albeit smaller, following.

Wrong

They certainly are headliner worthy, but not over an original lineup Jane's Addiction.

Wrong again.

NIN opened for JA on the "Wave Goodbye" tour, because they were rolling out with a much more toned down stage show, and set lists that were much more appealing to hardcore fans, compared to something appealing to more casual fans.

That's why they played songs live that they hadn't played in 20+ years, in some cases.

NIN got their big push opening for JA at the original Lollapalooza. Trent wanted to go out opening for them again.

But make no mistake, NIN has a bigger following than JA. There is 100X more work and $$$ that goes into a full on NIN experience concert than a JA concert (think multiple layers of LED screens being used to produce 3-d images vs bubbles, balloons, and confetti).

I'm not sure yet if this will be a toned down NIN show or not. I would be royally pissed if the NIN set was short, and light show was sub par, on account of Soundgarden performing. Soundgarden sucks in every way imaginable.
