Our builder/designer has received a number of national Dept.of Energy awards for his construction so we trust his judgement. I was not interested in battery storage due to cost and maintenance, but your suggestion is a good one. If we lose power, we will rely on candles and the wood-burning fireplace at night and during overcast, winter days. Thanks for all the good information.

I would be concerned that you'll have overkill. With thick walls, geothermal, ect, your electric bill probably will never approach $180 monthly that needs to be offset.

Just my $.02

Is natural gas or propane readily available?

You can toss in a generator and transfer switch as your emergency backup when needed if it is.

Nevermind. It looks you don't have a grid-tie system.
