J.Stewart in 'Mr Smith Goes to Washington'
Probably my favorite actor, but I think his best performance may have been Vertigo.

Deniro in Cape Fear was outstanding.

not greatest at all i'm sure, but jamie foxx definitely deserved his oscar for ray
He definitely deserved it. It sucks however, that because he won people tend to forget how incredible Don Cheadle was in Hotel Rwanda.
I was blown away by his perfomance.

You may be right. Great performance in a great movie.
I also think his portrayal of the schizophrenic George Bailey in 'It's A Wonderful Life' is underrated. The range of raw emotions, facial expressions, voice inflections, reactions, and situations that he went through is incredible..
(I should know, I have to talk like him for 2 hours every December when our Voice acting troupe performs a live radio stage presentation of 'IAWL' in Metairie :)

DDL in There Will Be Blood
TLJ in No Country for Old Men
Heath Ledger's Joker
O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia
Brad Dourif in Deadwood Doc Cochran's prayer meltdown when The Reverend is dying is about as strong as it gets. Very under appreciated/overlooked scene.
William Holden in The Wild Bunch
Just a few off the top of my head.
