It's actually very close to the book. I think the only significant difference is the way he tells the story. In the book, it's like a journal. He's writing the story. In the movie, he is telling the story to a therapist if I remember correctly. But it doesn't affect the story at all. It's just a more visual way to do it than having him write on a piece of paper and narrate what he writes.
You may be disappointed with the soundtrack or you may love it. Either way, it is totally worth watching. I love the book and really enjoyed the movie. Both hold themselves well independently too.
