I've read more A.S. than most here prior to his turning left. Here are a couple of insights into his earlier writings...

a. He definitely believes that male homosexuality is from birth, not learned. He didn't speak to female lesbians on this. His personal memory was just prior to puberty wanting to become a doctor so that he could lie in bed with an attractive unconscious male patient and snuggle. He had those sexual urges before he could have sex.

b. His 'normalization' idea came from family Holiday dinners. Like all of us there were 3 generations. The old folks, married, or perhaps one spouse deceased. Then the adults, married with young kids. When he brought his male partner they were accepted with careful politeness but they were not normal. They didn't fit into the traditional scene. And they very much want to.
