We actually use these on our dogs and it has worked out extremely well. It's a pressurized mat that makes a really high pitched noise when your dog sits on it. It will immediately stop them from getting on the couch unless they are deaf.

I agree. "Sofa Scram" or anything aversive will usually work but he would appreciate the dog bed as an alternative when the device is on the couch during the training period.
