Thankfully our case wasn't as bad but it happened in my family, too. A great uncle (retired ophthalmologist) had some $$ and when his first wife died of cancer he eventually remarried a lady who turns out to have had $$ in her eyes when she married him. Luckily he had two sons that she couldn't freeze out so he was kept in better shape than your grandfather.
It was definitely a different situation when family would visit (she'd put on a good show of being a good wife) and when they were alone by themselves in the house. Eventually he passed away and now the gold digger has spent all of his money so she's had to reduce her lifestyle. Unfortunately this means that his sons now have no inheritance. It's really a shame because she's a nice lady, just a bit...ruthless, financially.
