The "old Big East" was in a way broken into two; The American Conference (who took teams like Louisville, Cinci, UConn) and then the "new Big East" which kept the teams known as the Catholic 7 (Marquette, St. Johns, Georgetown, etc) and added Butler and Creighton.

Memphis was supposed to be join the big east before it blew up and the American was created
