There is a Soyuz capsule docked at the ISS at all times for emergency egress, they can leave the ISS any time they want. The capsule can only carry three, that is why there are never more than three people on the ISS at any time.
This is the correct answer. Soyuz is very 70's and cramped and all that. But it does get people into orbit and back down again safely. When you do the same thing over and over for 40 years with minor tweaks you tend to get reliable results even if you aren't trying to improve anything.

Honestly, the world economy is collectively screwed. If you take any of the major players out, the whole thing crumbles for everyone. Yes, the world central banks led by our Federal Reserve have been slowly destroying the economy with boom and bust cycles for the past century now. Competitive capitalism with endless growth and consumption is on its last legs. It is unsustainable and basically finished. That is a good thing but the transition to something new is going to suck.
