Maybe the rules have changed since I quit flying, but back then ALL airplanes had to have an ELT (emergency locator transmitter) installed to get an airworthiness cert. It had a little weight on a lever that would sense Gs from a crash kinda like an airbag sensor. It would transmit on 121.5 with a "whoop whoop" sound. Evidently that's not the case with this flight.

We had several of these go missing around that general area back in the 80s.


Nobody ever said a word. Those RC/EC guys all had a chestful of fruit salad. When the Russians shot down KAL 007, they thought it was an RC-135 and there was one actually in the area.
