I was always a bit skeptical about the TWA 800 conclusion. Arcing in the main fuel tank? I was hooking up with a KC-135 one night and saw a 16" mini static electricity lightning bolt GO DOWN THE AIR REFUELING DOOR just as the boomer was about to plug us. Probably happened all the time.
There was a B-52 that caught on fire, and the safety board concluded it was because of static electricity from a crew chief. I call bullshite on that one also. Nevertheless, we had safety pogues on the ramp making sure we rolled our gloves up and occasionally grounded bare skin to the aircraft.
