I have done it a couple of times myself.

But watched a couple of young dudes launch one and I told them the plug was not in and they said 'we'll just run it out' - so they let the thing fill about half up before they backed it out and pointed it towards the bay. Then they gunned the engine full throttle and the water all ran to the back - nose went in the air and the stern sank below the surface with the engine running flat out.
