I have not read the books either and found the movie very entertaining. It was a little disjointed and the story was rushed at times. Overall it was good though.

Kind of hard to believe that they had that base there for years and the whole time a queen wasn't ten miles from them.

I think in the book, he found it on another planet. It's been years, though. I might be wrong.
