I agree with Obama on this one.
We should cut the military and quit being world policemen.
Where I am sure Obama and I disagree is just how to respond to attacks on the USA. For example I believe we should have bombed Afganistan out of existence after 911--nuke or not.
I think we should encourage the full militarization of Japan and we should seriously consider withdrawing from NATO. We should never again lead a UN military effort like the Korean war.

You dont't think shrinking the military would not open us up to more terror attacks? You don't see this as making us look weak?

Freeman only worries about movie companies getting tax credits.

No. I don't think 911 would have happened if we did not have a base in Saudi Arabia. Do you?

Did we look weak when our spending levels were are 2001 levels before we got involved in all the wars?
Look weak to who? Only a fool would think the holders of the largest nuclear weapon stockpile in the world was weak. Only a fool would think the nation with the largest navy by far is weak.
You can't complain about big government and then advocate for defense spending to carry out far flung wars and military actions that have nothing to do with our defense.

Yes we need a bigger military. Let's throw more money at it and hope it makes everything better.
And 14 years of war is not enough. Let's continue sticking our nose into every hotspot around the world. Forget about our crumbling homeland.

Why not shrink it to the size of say Brazil's. Nothing bad could ever come of that, right?

Kind of like the 35 yrs we've thrown money at education.

That is not what is being proposed, and not worthy of further response.

What is it other than strength?? Only a fool would look at that stockpile as something weak.
OBL stated goals in regards to the US to was to rid the region of US military presence.
No one can look at our Middle East policies since the fifties and say we have done anything of particular benefit to the US's defense. It was just stupid to think we had to be involved in the Middle East to protect oil and nothing demonstrated that better than when Reagan ended price caps on gas and OPEC's ability to create embargos disappeared.
Even Eisenhower questioned the CIA's reasoning for installing the Shah of Iran. Stupid political rhetoric in Congress and from oil companies and CIA power centers pushed him to orchestrate the over throw of the democratically elected Iranian government.
I will take President Eisenhower's word on defense spending. I suppose given your bloated ego you consider yourself a better authority on such things than the most experienced warrior of the twentieth century.
quote:
“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.”
quote:
“In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

Looking at that graph, we should have China building our tanks, planes, ships, drones and missiles. We could save a bundle!

My post you quoted was in reply to the ludicrous idea of shrinking our military to the size of Brazil. That is not what anyone at the pentagon, Obama admin, or that chart has proposed.

I agree that we should shrink the military and have less of a standing army and more of a reserve.

cut the military yes, stop being the world policemen no. I don't want to give islamists or communist more influence in the world.

which would have just made more muslims hate the US and made the problem worse.

hell yes. It has been almost 70 years since WWII ended and Japan is probably our biggest ally outside of britain. Let them defend themselves against China.

so let evil dictators kill and rape millions of ppl great way to make friends.

We tried to address this. It was called the stimulus bill.
Except only a smidgen of it went towards infrastructure. So why would anyone trust Obama with a second chance?
By the way, what do you think about those funds being misappropriated, and why aren't you mad about it, given you're trying to come off as some steward of the economy?
Among many, wasting those dollars was Obama's biggest failure.

Our nuclear weapons are in place ONLY to prevent someone from using their nuclear weapons against us.
Are you really this out of touch with the reality of the last 65 years of conflicts in the world and why we maintain a nuclear arsenal?
Everyone is the world knows that we would not use our nuclear weapons in any conventional weapon conflict. We've proven that over and over again. We got our arse kicked in South Vietnam and we still refused to go nuclear. Terrorists trained in and directed from Afghanistan killed over 3,000 Americans on our soil and we didn't use nuclear weapons in Afghanistan.
I guess "everyone in the world" knows it but you.
Go back to movie tax credit threads. At least you appear to be up to date on that topic.
