My mom does it so I have that perspective (even though she works in the school system and that doesn't interest me in the least) and this semester I am interning at an outpatient clinic. I like what I do, but the loans scare the shite out of me. Would PTA be a dumb thing to do? Cheaper, but less pay. But also less responsibility.

Don't let the loans scare you.
If private school is your only option, do travel PT for 2-3 years and you'll have them gone in no time.
