Patara Elephant farm in Chiang Mai is worth the trip to Thailand alone. I also highly recommend A Lot of Thai cooking school in Chiang Mai if you are looking to do something along those lines.

I'd second that your time is better spent elsewhere than Phuket, but I'm sure you'll enjoy it too. Koh Lanta (roughly 2 hours drive from Krabi) was a nice relaxed place and wasn't overly touristy. Also, it is a great spot for Scuba Diving.

Street/casual food is definitely the way to go. We ate at a "nicer" restaurant one night in Chiang Mai, and both my wife and myself would have preferred to have just gone back to the night market. The exchange rate over there is great - you can eat like kings for $15 US.

Patara is on our itinerary. We are going to a cooking class with Baanthai Cookery School.

Definitely hoping to get some diving in!

Exchange rate right now is 32!
