What is verticutting? Is it cutting the ends of the blades of grass into strips?

It's what it sounds like. You are cutting with vertical blades. This cuts stolons, rhizomes, and thatch.

This is used to control thatch and grain. By cutting the stolons, you control the grain.

You can notice it usually. Sometimes followed by a top dressing application. Can be done shallow or more aggressive.

"A verticutter is a machine that has cutting knifes on a high speed spinning reel to cut slices through the grass and into the soil to make a passage and place for the seed to fall into for germination."
