This is a much better team compared to the one we had in 1980.

quote:was the question how do the teams compare talent wise or how does winning the gold compare? if talent wise I have no idea wasn't alive in 1980 but as far as winning the gold this isn't even a question. the 80 game was about MUCH more than just hockey

Which is why it's so famous. No way we're talking about yesterday's win in 35 years.

they beat Russia yesterday in a match that ESPN is already calling the greatest in the history of the Olympics, or something like that ..

well, sure .. this team is much older and are professional players .. but i don't think this team wins a seven-game series against the 1980 USSR team with all things equal ..

I'm not sure that Herb Brooks ever got enough credit for the superb coaching and motivation job that he did. What do you think?

I think he did get a lot of credit, and rightfully so. He was featured prominently in the movie, Miracle On Ice. I've got a buddy who played on that 1980 team. He said Herbie worked the crap out of the players, but it obviously all paid off.

Well, the 80s USSR team had been skating together for a very long time and that was their sole purpose. Especially these days, with the NHL players worried about injury, and not skating together, sure the USSR would have a huge advantage.
Winning gold here would be nice, but it would still pale in comparison.
Also, itll still be tough, going to have to get through the Russians again, and the Canadians to take it home.

Great story.
Do you mind divulging your buddy's name? Understand if you don't.
I saw some of the tryouts in 1979. You are right. Herbie was working their asses off in the tryouts.

Herb Brooks was probably one of the only guys that could have pulled that all off .. from all accounts, he had the right mix of toughness, motivation, and bench coaching ..

Who is your friend that played on that team ?
eta: isn't virtually that whole team basically pushing their 60s now ?

Herb Brooks gets tons of credit for 1980. Always has, even as he tried to deflect it to the players.
From a hockey standpoint, a 2014 gold is more significant. Every team is better and full of great players. The field is absolutely loaded - it's like have 6 or 7 dream teams out there.
Culturally? Not even the same ballpark. The Miracle On Ice is one of the biggest shared cultural sports touchstones of American culture.
It is arguably the most significant sporting event in US history, culturally speaking. You'll never have that again. Too many stars were aligned as the game took on increased socio-political importance.

1. Jesse Owens in Berlin
2. Miracle on ice
ETA: that's for different thread though
