The phone rang three times before the Detective Link picked it up, knocking over the paper cup of coffee in the process, a dark brown wave surging across the edge of the desk, a java waterfall pooling on the linoleum. He cursed under his breath while lifting the receiver, one of those old black curlicue cords accordioning in the coffee as he swiveled to avoid it splashing on his almost too tight slacks. He mentally reminded himself to avoid the open box of donuts on the table at the end of the office.
"Jordan police department...", his voice a practiced monotone, the result of one too many calls reporting stolen phones and petty nuisances, "Detective Link speaking."
His expression changed quickly, the disinterested slack falling from his face in one motion, some phantasm letting all the glibness from him.
"What!? Where!?"
Furious scribbling .
"Tell them to hold everything until I get there. Nothing moves. No one enters. No one leaves, you hear me?"
The detective silently, frantically signaled across the office, trying to get the attention of the dispatcher seated there.
"A Baby!? Is it...?" The detective's wild gestures finally got the dispatcher's attention.
"Jeez!...okay, get the baby into an ambulance, just...well, keep them there until I get there, okay? Get forensics there ASAP as well. I'll be there as soon as I can. And for god's sake make sure you check EVERYWHERE first."
He hung up the receiver, letting it fall from his hand with a clatter.
The dispatcher was beside him now, a look somewhere between excitement and worry on his face. "What's with all the shenanigans?" Randy asked in his dull, flat voice. Link looked incredulously at the product of nepotism and low hiring standards.
"Two dead. Husband and wife. The delivery man heard the baby screaming." Link sighed, "get me everyone we have available over to 4514 Norton Avenue. It's gonna be a long night."
