Could something as simple as redefining," Assisted Suicide" as " Aid in Dying" make it more palatable to Americans?

Apparently so?

DENVER — Helping the terminally ill end their lives, condemned for decades as immoral, is gaining traction. Banned everywhere but Oregon until 2008, it is now legal in five states. Its advocates, who have learned to shun the term “assisted suicide,” believe that as baby boomers watch frail parents suffer, support for what they call the “aid in dying” movement will grow further.
Apparently so?

I dont really care what you call it, terminally ill patients should have the right to medically end their lives if they want to.

Patients already are able to end their lives. Having doctors do it opens a door to abuse.

meh...nearly all freedoms open doors for abuse.

Not with medical help they arent. I'd much rather them do it safely under medical supervision than try to shot or hang themselves, where things often go wrong and just leave them in an even worse state.

Obviously a patient would need a terminal diagnosis and have to undergo a psychological evaluation first.
Ultimately though, literally anything can be abused. Do we stop providing pain meds to people who need them just because some in our society are drug seekers who abuse them?

I watched my best friend suffer from terminal cancer a few months ago and have different opinions about this. On one hand, it absolutely almost killed me watching him suffer and having these discussions. It is a chilling day when your best friend tells you he would kill himself if it were not for the life insurance policy that didn't cover suicide. On the other hand, the last few weeks he spent on earth were extremely important for the family he left behind. It allowed them to grasp the situation and spend those last days by side.
I can say that there was a point he was ready to give up, but then survival kicked in and he fought like hell until the end.

Listen, I have conflicted feelings about the subject and I can't imagine being in a situation where you are in severe pain, wanting to die, and can't. I'm just worried about what will happen if the practice is expanded.

It's a very difficult topic and not so black and white in my opinion.
