How much is my PC performance hurt by not reinstalling Windows?

A few months ago I did the big upgrade of a cpu/mobo. I have always reinstalled windows after this type of upgrade but figured I would see what happened just plugging everything back up and booting. To my surprise everything worked just fine. Had to install drivers and such but there were no really bad problems.
Am I hampering my performance by not formatting and reinstalling? Also if I do, should I go back to Win7 or go with Win8 like I currently have?

Your performance won't take a hit, you will be less stable and encounter errors.
