I left my first company (a value added reseller of IT equipment, like a mom and pop CDW) and went to work in a completely different industry. About 8 months into the new job, some former colleagues had opened up their own mom and pop selling IT equipment. I agreed to do some 1099 work for them, commission only, and successfully brought over around 75% of my targeted former clients. I did not attempt to bring over all my customers, just the big ones, but it was pretty easy based off of the relationship we had, even if we hadn't spoken to each other in almost a year.
I think it depends on the industry and your relationship with past clients, but 40-50% is probably a more realistic assumption.
