Anyone grow up in the Appalacians; question about Ginseng

I did. NW AL to be exact. But I never heard about digging for ginseng. I've been watching "American Outlaw," and just wondering if any other mountain folk has dug it. Those guys are making bank on digging a dang root.

not making what the show says they are making. Wet root will not get the $$ they are getting.
Fake show but entertaining is its own way I guess.
Not a fan of the Histoy channel putting out shows like this. Glamorizing trespassing, theft, threats on human life, etc.
This is a show for Tru TV or Spike, not History

That's what I was wondering, because if they were making that much, people where I grew up would be digging it.

Okay, I just read that dry root makes the cash. So I'm assuming the show leaves off the drying process before these guys sell it to the dealer.

I see you've never been in the Appalachian's. People DGAF about the Gov, and her laws. It's a different culture, and one most people will never understand. And the closer you get to Kentucky and West V, the more dangerous it gets.

but that is ol' Appalachia outlaw life..
now, this way of life has subsided greatly since the large majority of people who led this life have gotten on, "the check",(btw, that 60 minutes piece only touches the tip of the iceberg)
because of this, what is happening people are getting on disability for bad back, getting a Rx and then flipping/trading for other drugs/money
so instead of people scavenging the hillside for ginseng, moonshine, pot etc., they are laid up in their house getting stoned being leaches on the american economy

Agree. It's sad because of how beautiful the surrounding country is. I moved away, but all I can think about are those mountains. Too bad the white trash is killing the culture.

there is going to be a social war up here one day..
it is going to be the haves vs. have nots, workers vs. check collectors, taxpayers vs. leaches
i'm ready, my body is ready.. this has been coming for quite a while and when it does happen.. well.. katie bar the door

Sounds exactly like how the tv show "Justified" makes it look

it's pretty scary how similar it is
pot wars, pills mills, gubment scamming, you name it, it is going on..
but, as i type this i listen to whistle of the coal train making it's way down the tracks by my office, there is still hope
it is just goint to take a grassroots movement of epic proportions for people to say,"enough is enough"

No need. I was just wondering how secluded you were. Where I lived, it was close to ATL, so that keep the trouble in balance. I couldn't imagine how life in West Virginia is.

What will happen to that area when Obama shuts down the coal mines?

Serious question. That would have to devastate an already poor area. But since it's majority white I'm sure he don't give shite.
