I've always thought this is the biggest BS, maybe Harvard. If your a good student your ability will stand out no matter where your degree is from. I will say a large Alumni base helps, if there in the field your interested in.

if football doesnt pan out, a degree from LSU doesnt come close to a degree from UCLA
Not to mention the cost of living factor mentioned.
