You killed that deer! Now, dont give up on him. As other's have suggested, get a dog if possible. Look EVERYWHERE. Look very closely using a tight grid. If it's really thick, you may step on him before you find him. No exit wound may result in no blood on the ground.
I killed two on back to back years just how you described. Both were killed on very small plot in a 3 yr old cutover. Absolutely no blood for either, but were both found inside of 50 yards. The first took quite some time. Six buddies and all were convinced I had missed. Refused to give up and ended up actually stepping on his leg (scared the piss out of me). The second was found quickly with a really good dog.
