Get a "hybrid". Sig P938. Basically a 9mm 1911 without the grip safety.

A compromise on the other end of the spectrum would be a glock 36. Very small and concealable pistol with .45 ACP stopping power. Thinnest gun glock makes (maybe outside of their new .380)

Choosing from your two options though I'd go with the ruger. I shot a 1911 for the first time Saturday, and I'll tell you what man, they are fine

It sounds like you really won't be carrying unless you foresee going into a rougher or unfamiliar part of town, in that case you aren't going to worry about comfort. I'd rather have a .45 on my nightstand than a 9mm (but I have a 10mm, so I'll never have to make that choice )

Speaking of, the glock model 29 gives you 10-15 rounds of bad to the bone tried and true 10mm stopping power in a subcompact pistol. It is sufficient enough power to carry as a sidearm in the the woods and will drop a hog or coyote where it stands.
