two actors who played Caesar and Antony in Rome were reduced to playing those roles. Ugh. Pained me to see them in that movie.

I thought that Ciarán Hinds was a little underused as Tardos Mors, but Purefoy stole the show as Kantos Kan (perfect casting).

The movie as a whole was pure win. As an ERB fan I'm saddened that we'll never see sequels. But at least I have this awesome adaption of John Carter of Mars on my DVD shelf.

Very good movie. Not handled very well by the director (Andrew Stanton) - dude had done an excellent job with the Pixar stuff he had done, but totally blew up the budget with reshoots and such with his FIRST foray into live action. He handled the marketing as well . . . and botched it. Pulled "from Mars" from the title too.

Disney trusted the guy, from his Pixar work, and gave him too long a rope. They should have stopped him, made him work within his means.

It did finally make enough to cover its production costs (250 million, mainly from overseas), and maybe made enough from other sales to maybe cover the marketing costs (100 million) as well. So, it wasn't the failure everyone made it out to be.

Sucks there will be no sequel. I read from some of the actors how it was supposed to be great. The guy that played in Rome, was supposed to have a much larger storyline in the next one. In the books, he is John Carter's best friend

All this but the major flaw of marketing that movie was: THE ASININE ASSUMPTION THAT EVERYONE IN AMERICA HAD READ THE BOOKS AND KNEW WHO JOHN CARTER WAS!

I never read the books, had never heard of John Carter, and when i saw the trailer thought "why is that 19th century dude suddenly shirtless in the desert? Is that a dog or a giant lizard? why are these 4-armed people speaking english?

They didnt even show the white apes until a week or two before the movie opened so they werent in the original trailers.

The movie is very "out of time." It's a 1950's science fiction film with modern effects. That means some cheese, some pointless Bombast, and some cheeky humor, and "aw, shucks" moments. That doesn't resonate with most people in contemporary society.

I didn't think it was cheesy, at least not in the Captain America sense.

But you're right about it being out of time. This movie really works if people still thought Mars could support life or did. I think the movie did a decent job of at least making that sound possible again for imagination sake.

I haven't had to discuss this movie with anyone in a while, but after reading this thread, I'm pretty disappointed this movie didn't do so well. And the people I know IRL that saw it loved it too. It's a damn shame.

I've been having it recorded on my DVR forever and after reading this thread I watched it last night. I thought it was really good, and had a GREAT ending. I wish there could be a sequel!

I'm another person who really enjoyed this movie. Thought it was very well done. But, I watched it based on prior discussion on this board. The previews made it look terrible. But, thanks to people on this board, I knew to give it a chance.

If anyone is so motivated to try to "push" for a sequel, this website has a number of links regarding that issue:
