If you don't care about touchwiz then cyanogen is a great option.
Once you get your custom recovery installed (like the other poster mentioned twrp or cwm whatever) you want should make a nandroid backup of your device at that time. With that backup you can always revert back to it just in case. Also you can make a nandroid of say a touchwiz ROM and say a aosp ROM (like cyanogen). This way you can run whatever you feel like by just restoring your nandroid backups. You will get the hang of it and it will be easy soon enough.

You will probably have more luck with cyanogenmod on your phone. I believe PA is mostly focused on getting their version of Kit Kat rolled out for Nexus devices at the moment.
