May be visiting this summer. Is it safe? Will I die at the hands of a cartel? Anything that is a must do?
TIA
TIA

If you stay at the resort no. If you go into the village, that shite is scary... But kinda cool.

We went there for our honeymoon and loved it. Wasn't white sand, but it had the combo of beach and mountains.
It seemed safe (we went of property for excursions and into town). This was in 2010, though.

Nuevo Vallarta is nice. About 10 min north of Puerto Vallarta

1. Purchase an acid-resistant mask for your face.
2. Have enough liquid funds available to cover any ransom demands.

Stayed just south of downtown in a condo up on the mountainside. Walked through town daily, took the bus (crazy fun) to the southern beaches and up north. Ate at the local spots...not Senor Frog's and that BS. Hung out in local bars. Had a blast. Felt safer than in NOLA or Miami.

Sister got married there last year. It seemed safe to me. Pretty nice place.

It's fun
Just don't ride the bus pass about midnight
The beaches are really rocky, but still fun to have candlelit dinners during sunset on
Also book and ATV ride in the country side, it's guided but so freaking fun, and just carry a little cash at a time on you.

It's good to know that the area is not inherently unsafe. There should be a group of us, so...

You can also rent mo-peds and scoot all around the city, or go horseback riding in the mountains.
Just like any other country, stay with your group.
And DO NOT buy and chicklets (gum) from the village kids,
Cause they will NOT stop bugging you to buy more

As this guy said, if you're going to that area, look just a bit further north to Nuevo Vallarta. It's a little nicer.
The only problem I heard of while vacationing there was that the local cops were pulling over tourists on BS traffic violations to extort $50-$100 out of them.
