That is true. For example, you can get two first tickets to Bangkok from MSY. To generate those points, it could cost you as little as $1800 in expenditures to create enough points to book the tickets. That isn't a terrible cost for booking two economy tickets to Bangkok straight up. However, I'd be booking first class tickets in this scenario, which sell for $24,000.
