Rewatch the Cecil videos. The '97 OL was better than anything we have had in a long time. Faneca was perhaps the best OL ever at LSU. Put Hill behind that line with a run happy scheme like they had and he easily gets 1600-1800 yards.

Hill finishes long runs. Cecil often didn't.

I feel like most people are looking at potential. You can't be the best if you never finish.

Nah, that line had Faneca and McClure who were studs by Brandon Winey and Louis Williams two future starters were both freshman and didn't start that year. I believe Ryan Thomassie started opposite Faneca and as far as the rest, I don't remember but I am certain Winey/Williams were not the starting as freshman.

LSU has potentially several NFL caliber players on the line currently Turner and Collins should both find a spot in the NFL along with Porter, Alexander, and several of the back ups. The line today would blow the doors off those lines from the 90's because of the amount of talent up and down it along with the back ups.

I's say it's silly to say Collins was "better" than anyone with a larger body of work.

But, I will say this. I've been watching football for a loooooong time and for those three games, Cecil was the best performer I've ever seen at LSU and in the argument as best performer I've ever seen period(Herschel was just ridiculous too).

All I know is, when I watched him for those three games, I was absolutely convinced I'd never seen anything like him. I mean, I really couldn't even believe what I was seeing. Then, he gets hurt and oh well.

I love me some Jeremy Hill, but at no point have I ever watched him and had the same felling I had back then. That's no crime of course. He's great. Just telling ya how I saw it.

He had great potential, but a very short career. Who knows who was actually better.

RUSHING GP Att Gain Loss Net Avg TD Long Avg/G
Kevin Faulk 9 205 1187 43 1144 5.6 15 53 127.1
Rondell Mealey 11 112 689 25 664 5.9 7 44 60.4
Cecil Collins 4 72 622 26 596 8.3 3 69 149.0

Mississippi State 172 yards
Auburn 232 yards
Akron 179 yards
Vanderbilt 13 yards on 3 carries injured

Body of work, how good were these teams and how good were their run defense.

Mississippi Run defense ranked 37th
Vanderbilt run defense ranked 42nd
Auburn run defense ranked 62nd
Akron run defense ranked 63rd

LSU run defense ranked 35th

Cecil just does not have the number of games [body of work] to be declared the best running back seen either in person or on TV. Comparing Cecil to others is simply what could have been but we all know mentally Cecil was a train wreck that happened sooner than later.

My 2 cents: Faulk was better all around by far..but Collins could have been better than Faulk....Hill comes the closest to those two than any other back we have had since them...Thats very impressive!...If Hill comes back he and LF will be the best 1 2 punch LSU has ever had at Running Back barring any injuries...

Feed Hill till he gets tired...In Comes LF to finish em off...Cant wait to watch next season

cecil was incredible I remember the hs championship game in the dome vs salmon...

I still think hill is faster , the small edge I would give Collins is he was one of those backs that defenses didn't want to tackle....

so is hill but small edge to cecil...

This, I was amazed at what I was seeing. Cecil didn't jus run over, he ran through. Hill is agreat back and I am thankful he is a tiger.

This.

I've never seen anyone run like Colin's ran against Auburn. The game went back in forth with Auburn and Craig passing and LSU and Collins running. For some inexplicable reason, on the pivotal play, Dinardo runs Tyler on a bootleg and we lose. Collins was an animal that night (and maybe an animal on a few other nights that got him in jail).

Cecil Collins = Potential

Not enough on field production/games to truly measure.

McNeese and the Dolphins aren't having this type of a debate.

McNeese - 28 (attempts) - 117 (yards) - 4.17(avg)

Dolphins - 131 (attempts) - 414 (yards) - 3.2 (avg)

you'd think a sure fire hall of famer and heisman winner and best running back in the history of the school would have better numbers. weird.

He was splitting carries with Kevin Faulk and was leading the NATION in rushing.

He wasn't the same after breaking his leg.

No doubt he was better than Hill while eligible at LSU though. Probably the best pure RB LSU has had.
