Also, and this question is for anyone, but my GF is having trouble getting a CC.

She's in graduate school and only income is loan money with no job. She's applied for some low-level cards and has gotten rejected. Her credit score is very low because most of her stuff is still in her parents name.

Any recommendations? Should I add her on one of my cards to help get her score up, or will that mess with my utilization ratio and therefore damage my credit score?

I'm at like a 760 now and don't want anything to mess it up

That's a bummer. CC companies are starting to again allow a spouse to list the household income for card purposes, but since she isn't your spouse, she can't do that.

Authorized user isn't supposed to show up on her credit report, but there seems to be confusion there or not always the case. Instead she'd have to be a "joint" user but I've never tried that.

Not having income is the real killer for her. She can't get a Capital One Secured Credit card or something similar? Also, if she happens to have access to USAA go that route first, she'll be golden there. There are a few "Student Credit Cards" around she should shoot for.

Why does she want one? Just to increase her score?

Do you by chance have an old card that has excellent usage (very little % of limit)? The older the better and the lower the % the better. You can add her on to that and that would help the score. Or maybe her parents have a card like that?

Example-I put my son on an oooooold cap one card that I have that isn't even in my wallet. I've had it for about 6 years-ish. I only keep about $20 charged on it and pay it down to $2 every month when I get the statement. Rinse, repeat. I usually just buy something small on amazon and use that card.

His credit went from zero (was 18 at the time and no credit at all) and now over a year later his score is better than mine (yours too).
