Dude, the AMEX Gold is just overkill. I honestly don't understand the points thing you're trying to get. You already secured the bonus.

The platinum has all the benefits of the Gold with the exception of double accrue.

The amount he spends on gas and groceries justifies him having both IMO.

If you go get a CSP, it has double points, is a VISA and you get a signup bonus.

It gets double points on restaurants and travel neither of which he has indicated he spends a significant amount on. But that sign-up bonus is worth it

Diversify your wallet. Not all places take AMEX.

This is something I really agree with and I do. I prefer to have a mastercard as my alternate card since Sam's takes it and not Visa or Amex.

And like I said earlier, your spend isn't enough to justify paying an additional fee to get 10-12K points because it honestly is only about $75 redeemable credit.

He is spending $2k a month on groceries and gas. that isn't 10-12k points more its 24k more points

Congratulations! Your application for Chase Sapphire Preferred Card has been approved.

The deed is done. Will get 40,000 bonus points after I spend the initial requirement which is not difficult for me.
The question now is to axe the Gold? Or keep?

Yes, it's true I don't travel as much anymore, but like you said the sign-up makes it worth it especially since the fee is waived.

It's only 12K over the standard 1pt purchase with Platinum.
