so instead of using a debit card, why not use a CC and get rewards for it?

No offense, but it sounds like she's a little premature on playing around with points. She's not in a position to get a good rewards card it sounds like. She needs to repair that credit and as soon as you get her 670-700ish then I'd consider attempting again.

Ya but even if her score goes up, would she still be able to get one even without income? She's likely to be in school until she's 27 or so, and maybe even more.

Regardless of the income situation, right now she needs to build the credit score up and cross the rewards bridge later.

I will say this, my credit score wasn't stupendous when I started, but I have good income and a long credit history so they just looked the other way

When her time comes it comes. That's what doesn't get talked about. It all takes time.

SPG

worth it?

I have 75K on my Hilton AMEX right now and since it's so inflated, I'm thinking of burning them for a vacation or something and looking into SPG.

My dad has Hilton, Marriott and SPG and has always said SPG is the best value, but the hotels seem to be lacking of late.

The real value of SPG is for airline transfers since every 20,000 point transfer comes with a 5,000 mile transfer bonus. SPG has something like 30 airline partners. I have it for point diversification (you never want all your eggs in one basket when a devaluation occurs) and for those random airlines I may need to book that I don't have miles with. I haven't used it yet, just building the point balance with it and may need it come honeymoon time or future date.

But its always listed in the Top 5 or so cards for a reason and a FT favorite so that's enough for me.

Also SPG allows for "Household" point transferring, so that's awesome as that doesn't require a legal spouse like Chase UR does.

None taken. It was my idea

I figured she could start out like me…with a simply cash back card with like a 500 or 1K limit, then work her way up after a few years.

That was until I realized how terrible her credit score was (not her fault).

Anyway, I guess at this point the important part is to build that credit back up because when she starts working full time and is making boatloads of cash, we'll need more cards

really? did not know. My dad was traveling a lot before when using all 3, but he's retired so that stopped. We've talked about him transferring points.

So you're saying if I sign up for SPG, he can give me all of his points. He probably has like 50K or 100 or something

As long as your SPG account address is the same as his for I think 30 days prior to the transfer.

I used to think this, but I've changed my thinking.
I'm using SPG strictly for hotel points now. They have rewards stays in Manhattan for 12k that fetch >$400 per night plus the 5th night free make that a 48k redemption that would've probably cost almost $2k.
They also have some nice redemptions in Hawaii, Europe, and st Maarten.

I'm finding it easier to get value out of strictly airline cards for flights than extended stays at hotels by transferring points. This is for someone that doesn't get a lot of reward perks for actually staying at hotels.

Hotel keepers:
Chase IHG
Chase Hyatt
Amex SPG isn't a keeper necessarily, but a good churner between personal and business especially if you have a partner.

Hmmm, can't argue that.

I should have said it's versatility is the real value.

Absolutely. Versatility is the real value.

Meant to get the club Carlson this year, but my impulse apps negated that. I think that can be a real good card. I sent off to have my credit pulls blocked from ADR And IAS(?) and got confirmation that they were in a week. I'll probably grab that in my next AOR at the end of the year.

The highest spg gets is 30,000 points in the fall.

DUI checkpoint thread on OT just reminded me of another OTR I used to live by. Random spark

Well guys, funny thing happened tonight. Fiancee all of a sudden was open to a trip this Christmas after visiting her family in VA, so I went ahead and applied and got approved for that targeted United offer (50k after 2k spend plus 5k after adding authorized user).

Looks like we're going some where fancy for about 8-10 days this winter

Teddy, do you happen to know how Chase defines"domestic partner?" I assumed a live in SO would work.

In what terms? Chase seems to be the screwiest of all. My fiancee has a CSP that's in my name and it took nothing more than just giving them her name and they sent her a card. But I've heard some instances of where you have to use their SS# and it impacts their credit score.

UR points may be transferred to your spouse or domestic partner.

Transfers may only be used to combine rewards belonging to the same individual or business in the Program; or for the purpose of enabling spouses or domestic partners to combine rewards earned in their respective names.

I called the CSP direct line and asked a few months ago because I'd have to book the honeymoon before we were married. They said it would be fine, but what I recommend perhaps is to use the CSP phone line to do the transfer if you can. I don't see how you would get in trouble if they are they ones who processed it for you.

*Reports are transferring to non spouses will get your account terminated. I suggest you could use the story above to work out a transfer with your SO if she doesn't fit their definition. I'm not exactly sure what their criteria really is, but I imagine, again just working with them.

Maybe ask to define it the first time you call and see if they would bend, if you get a no, call back later and call about your fake honeymoon.

And they also offer a 5k referral bonus. Sign yourself up then sign the spouse up when you get yours. 75k easy SPG points when minimum spend is met. Lots of value/versatility in that.
