On what basis? His (Mawae) resume is blank.

How about 16 years in the NFL. 6 consecutive pro-bowls and 8-time All-Pro. He understands what it takes to be on a unit that tied the NFL record in the NFL of fewest sacks allowed. He understands how the job needs to be performed on the o-line after being in the NFL for 16 seasons what it takes to stay there. He understands what it takes to do the job in the trenches at a high-level. That is not something just any o-line coach, lacking actual playing experience, can teach.

Not saying he's the best hire, but that would be his case versus someone who just coached on a bunch of teams but didn't actually play the position at a high level. O-line coaching is development and teaching. He would have real-time insight into what to do when a defense changes up what they're doing. Real-world, "on-the-job" training is the best kind you can get. It gives way to practical experience. It's a matter of applying principles/techniques with practical experience which is what this line has been missing. Williford said as much during an interview when he was helping the team out this season.
