Yea....you should just follow the USDA's recommendations. That's the best advice. Look at where it has brought us.
In seriousness, I don't subscribe to a formal diet, but paleo generally has good advice. They exclude some things that I view as extreme (dairy, legumes, etc.), but overall it is a whole food diet plan. Every trend has idiots or people that find loopholes to do stupid things (ie the honey granola comment above), but most medical guidelines for diets include some questionable advice.....such as promoting whole grains and restricting dietary fat for people with diabetes.
Nutrition is a discipline that offers completely contradictory opinions from qualified authorities who use data that supports their claims. Most subjects aren't black and white....just a lot of gray.
