I use trip advisor for all my travels. Used it when deciding what hotels to stay at in Costa Rica, what tour companies to use, etc, etc.
You have to look past those reviews and see what the general consensus is for whatever place you are researching.
I love that site and have not been disappointed with any place I stayed at that had a lot of good reviews on trip advisor.

all I see is "this place is horrible I had to wait 10 minutes for a drink…" 3/4 of the "reviews" aren't very logical.
Most of the bad reviews are often either "Trip from hell" which can be ignored, or people who had the wrong expectations like singles at a family resort or vice versa. But a bad review can actually tell you that the place is exactly what you're looking for if it's detailed enough.
You might look for a message board dedicated to Cabo. I know when planning trips to Playa del Carmen in the past a local message board was pretty helpful in finding out things that Trip Advisor couldn't tell me.
