I watched it again. Really good ep. Love how Scotty was just going to look for them until they searched every asteroid. Elinor Donahue is really good in this.
You can always tell when an episode has a Gene Coon influence and this one definitely did. Looks like DC Fontana had her say as well.

Not sure about Fontana, but Geen Coon wrote this script, so, spot on for that analysis. Of course, this episode was produced during the period where he was the showrunner for TOS, as well. He only wrote/co-wrote/story for 12 TOS episodes, but some of the very best were his.
