The bigger question is what contracts looked like in 2008 for 3rd round picks versus what they look like now.

This is a basic cost-benefit scenario.

A guy can leave early and go in the 5th round or he can risk staying and try to earn a 3rd round grade. What is the economic benefit of those two extra rounds in today's market versus what it was in 2008?

Unless you are going to be able to upgrade yourself in your senior season to a 1st round draft pick from a 2nd or 3rd round grade (and willing to accept the risk), then it appears the market of players is saying to risk of returning for school is not worth it.

Another angle to remember is the personal piece. If you came in with a bunch of guys out of high school and then they all go pro, then this will tempt you to go pro as well. Those are your friends and the people you are closest with on the team.

nobody is pondering why OBJ/Landry/Hill are leaving, and we wouldn't have in 2008, either

you EXPECT to lose those guys (at least since miles' lost the mojo to get them to stay)

but this still begs the question of when this changed and why, because we didn't see this even 3 years ago, really
