what has changed for late round picks?

I think the question is what changed for non-first round picks.

Unless you can improve enough to get in the first round, is it worth delaying your NFL career to be a slightly higher paid second rounder than a 5th rounder?

The bigger question is what contracts looked like in 2008 for 3rd round picks versus what they look like now.

This is a basic cost-benefit scenario.

A guy can leave early and go in the 5th round or he can risk staying and try to earn a 3rd round grade. What is the economic benefit of those two extra rounds in today's market versus what it was in 2008?

Unless you are going to be able to upgrade yourself in your senior season to a 1st round draft pick from a 2nd or 3rd round grade (and willing to accept the risk), then it appears the market of players is saying to risk of returning for school is not worth it.

Another angle to remember is the personal piece. If you came in with a bunch of guys out of high school and then they all go pro, then this will tempt you to go pro as well. Those are your friends and the people you are closest with on the team.

I get the "getting to the second contract reasoning" but how many free agents (who think they will be drafted) are still in the league in 5 years??? NFL -Not for long

The big difference is now the pay increase for 3rd rd compared to 6th rd is not a big difference. If players are picked in the 6th rd tey make similar money to the 3rd pick so if you think you could make a jump from 6th rd to 3rd rd their is no reason to hang around.
