Dig into the snow. It's a hell of a lot warmer there than it is on the surface. Snow insulates you from the cold. There's no way I would camp on the surface at 40 below unless it was absolutely necessary for survival.

Ive been in -36 degree weather, not camping tho. I had a place to go when I couldn't bare it anymore. You can feel the moisture in your skin starting to freeze at -36. No way I would want to camp in -40.
