I wish I could build a pizza oven. That would be some fun to have, but the TV is going over the fireplace and I'll use that more.
I'm not planning to cook on it.
I think this is true indoors. He's telling me "no" with regard to outdoors, which I knew to some degree, but now he's sounding like there won't be much heat generated at all. I want the best of all worlds, dammit.

TV over the fireplace?
Ventless fireplace will send most of the heat right up the screen of the TV if it hangs over the fireplace. Better read the book on the logs before you buy them. Many ventless logs say "Nothing above the fireplace" and give explicit instructions on the mantle materials and distances - due to heat damage concerns.

So if you want heat output but gas won't deliver, then why bother with a fireplace at all? (not being cheeky, just wondering). I'd wager that outdoor fireplaces are the least used of all backyard upgrades in south Louisiana. Oh, wait, maybe you're living someplace with more than 2 weeks of winter, lol.
2 of my sibs have recent gas fireplace installations, and both sets of logs (one small, one big) look pretty real. Glowing embers, flickering flames, the works. My bro's gas fireplace puts out so much heat he rarely turns it on. You can't sit within 4 feet of the thing. Dunno what brand.
