even though they seem to be going to the three tribe format?

If that is as gimmicky as it gets i will be happy. Yea, i would be a lot happier if they went old school and had just 2 tribes in a new location we haven't seen before with no idols, but that just isn't going to happen.

Having 3 tribes is a pretty small twist compared to returning players vs new players or RI. Over the past 2 seasons you have really seen the difference between the people who have played the game 2-3 times before vs the newbies.

The newbies get dominated because the returning players all know each other and have pregame alliances, whereas the newbies don't know anybody.

With Redemption Island you have all the tension sucked out. What's the point about getting excited about a huge blindside if the person voted out is still in it.

This is about as back to basics as we can hope to get. I only hope that season 29 does the same thing because i have a strong suspicion that Season 30 will be another all returning players season. Which i am absolutely fine with so long as they bring back mostly people who have only played 1-2 times. To do that they need to have the next 2 seasons as all new people to get some new blood in.

In any case i only expect the 3 tribe format to last about 3-4 episodes before they merge into 2 tribes

I actually enjoyed this season. Thought a lot of interesting things happened (blindsides, drawing rocks, Ciera voting for mom, etc).

Although it was pretty gimmicky. Wouldn't mind getting back to the basics. A new cast could be fun too.
