I haven't been keeping up with his story. Is he expected to be able to walk again at some point or is he in the similar situation Eric LaGrande is?

Last report I heard was he was regaining some movement and feeling in his extremities. If I had to guess, I'd say he'll eventually be able to use his arms again but won't walk on his own.
Of course, they're also very close to having functional exoskeletons. It's already possible to control a robot with just your thoughts, so now they just have to put a patient inside the robot. There are plans to have a quadriplegic do the ceremonial opening kick at the World Cup.
From there, it'll just be a matter of making the technology more lightweight and that's something we know how to do very well.
