On a serious note, calling someone brave who has an illness always bothered me. It's not like they chose it. If you volunteered for cancer in order to save someone else's life, that would be brave. Getting treatment and dealing with it the best you can is getting treatment and dealing with it the best you can.

I'm not sure that's more sensitive. It's a hard thing to deal with, and you're blowing smoke up their butts. I think you can be sensitive and empathize while still being honest, and I think they'll appreciate it more.
