Gimmicks isn't exactly the right word.

Every option offense relies on the offensive line correctly making the series of blocks they need to make. They don't have to hold blocks that long, because what is important is to make the defense hesitate. Often, they leave the defensive end unblocked, so that the QB can make him commit to one of his options before deciding where to go.

People think it's a gimmick because it has a different look and different options, but it is the same kind of philosophy that Texas, Oklahoma and Alabama won a lot of national titles in the 60s & 70s with. It is sound fundamentally, and when run properly, it's really hard to stop.

Stopping it relies on getting defensive line penetration, like we did against Oregon in 2011.

The better description would be to say it's a "read and react offense". And we better be ready to beat a better version of it next year than we saw this year.

I also agree with Thorny. It's worked against some really good defenses and I wish we could get those kind of results.

Not that our run game was bad, but could you imagine Auburn's run game with our pass game and our 2011 defense? Unstoppable.

yes, those are gimmicks...

it works until defenses adjust, then it fades. That's why Texas, Oklahoma and Alabama don't run those offenses any longer. The zone-read fad in the NFL is starting to fade as well.
