I'm it's just the top 4 with one more spot available for the "BCS bowls" for a qualifying team not in the 6 major conferences.

Aside from that, I think it's more like it used to be with the bowls picking the matchups they want (largely based on conference tie-ins).


Like the playoff or not, the one thing that has seemed likely from the people like Mandel at SI.com that have been doing "what if" scenarios is that there may be less crappy matchups that there have been with the BCS.

I haven't even thought about that.

The top three are guaranteed one (the "98 Kansas State" rule).
