There's a lot of differences, but Martin was inspired by Tolkien, even though they both have completely different takes on their fantasy universes. Both are very complete universes and there are certain fantasy elements; LOTR you have elves, GoT has White Walkers, dragons, etc. ASOIAF/Got=lots of grey characters; LOTR: you're either good or evil.

Martin was inspired by Tolkien but it's absolutely impossible to write a fantasy story and not be inspired by the man who created the genre. But saying GRRM "borrowed" aspects of Tolkiens story implies that there are things that were taken out of LOTR and placed in ASOIAF and I can't see where that's the case.
Except possibly the naming of swords and that occurred in real life so
